A defined jawline is one of the most searched looks goals, for men and women alike. The good news: several things genuinely make your jawline look sharper. The bad news: some popular methods, like jaw exercisers and mewing, have little evidence behind them. Here's an honest guide to what works.
What makes a jawline look defined?
How sharp your jaw looks depends on:
- Bone structure: the width and angle of your jaw and chin (genetic).
- Soft tissue: fat under the chin and along the jaw, and skin firmness.
- Posture: head and neck position change the angle between jaw and neck.
- Lighting and camera angle: shadows define edges.
- Grooming: beards and haircuts create or hide lines.
You can't change bone structure without medical procedures, but you can change most of the rest.
1. Fix your posture
Forward head posture ("tech neck") softens the angle between the jaw and the neck and can create the look of a double chin. Keep your ears roughly over your shoulders, and lift your screen to eye level. This is the fastest free change.
2. Find your best photo angle
- Hold the camera slightly above eye level.
- Push your chin slightly forward and then down; it stretches the skin under the jaw.
- Use side or top lighting to cast a soft shadow under the jaw.
- Avoid wide-angle selfies at arm's length, which distort the lower face.
3. Lower overall body fat
The jaw and neck are areas where fat often shows. A healthy diet, regular exercise and enough sleep reduce overall body fat, which usually makes the jawline more visible. You can't spot-reduce fat from the face with exercises.
4. Reduce puffiness
Facial bloating blurs the jawline. Helpful habits:
- drink enough water,
- limit salty foods and alcohol, especially in the evening,
- get enough sleep.
5. Use facial hair strategically
A short boxed beard or heavy stubble with a clean neckline about one to two fingers above the Adam's apple creates a sharp, artificial jawline. Keep the cheeks slightly shorter and the jaw edge crisp. See beard styles by face shape and preview looks with the beard filter.
6. Choose a haircut that frames the jaw
- Short sides and height on top draw the eye upward and make the lower face look more structured.
- Chin-length bobs for women can either highlight a strong jaw or soften it; layers that end just below the jaw add definition.

7. Contour (if you wear makeup)
A matte bronzer one to two shades darker than your skin, applied just under the jawbone and blended down the neck, adds definition. Highlight the top of the cheekbones and the chin.
What about jawline exercises?
Chewing gum, jaw exercisers and "jawline trainers": there's little evidence they visibly change jaw shape. Overusing them can cause jaw pain and TMJ problems, and chewing very hard gum for long periods isn't recommended by dentists.
Neck and chin exercises: may strengthen neck muscles and improve posture, which can help a little indirectly.
Mewing: no strong evidence that tongue posture reshapes adult facial bones. Read our honest guide to mewing.
Medical options
Fillers, fat reduction and surgical procedures exist. They carry costs and risks and should only be considered after talking with a qualified, board-certified professional, not based on social media trends.
What's your face shape?
A sharper jaw looks different on a round face than on a long one. Find your shape with the face shape detector and read the face shapes guide.
FAQ
How can I get a sharper jawline naturally?
Improve posture, reduce body fat and facial puffiness, groom a beard with a clean neckline, choose a haircut with short sides, and use flattering photo angles.
Do jawline exercises work?
There's little evidence that jaw exercisers or chewing exercises visibly reshape the jaw, and overuse can cause jaw pain.
Does chewing gum give you a jawline?
Not meaningfully. It may slightly work the chewing muscles, but it won't change jaw shape and excessive chewing can strain the jaw.
Why don't I have a jawline?
Common reasons are genetics, forward head posture, body fat around the face and neck, and puffiness. Posture and grooming changes can help a lot.
Can a beard give you a jawline?
Yes. A short beard with a sharp neckline can create the look of a strong jawline.
