  • Face the camera straight on, at eye level, with a neutral expression.
  • Pull your hair back from your forehead and jaw, and take off glasses.
  • Hold the phone at arm's length: very close selfies distort proportions.

Your photo is measured in your browser and is not uploaded for this result. Only use a photo of yourself, or one you have permission to use.

What the face shape detector measures

The tool finds landmarks on your face and compares four measurements, the same ones a stylist uses with a tape measure:

  • Face length: from the center of your hairline to the tip of your chin.
  • Forehead width: across the widest part of your forehead.
  • Cheekbone width: across the widest part of your cheekbones.
  • Jaw width: from one jaw angle to the other, plus how sharp or rounded the jaw angle is.

The ratios between those numbers decide your shape. You see the measurements in your result, so you can check the logic yourself.

The 7 face shapes

Face shape How to recognize it
Oval Face is longer than it is wide, cheekbones are the widest point, jaw is softly rounded.
Round Length and width are nearly equal, cheeks are full, jawline is soft with no strong angles.
Square Forehead, cheekbones and jaw are about the same width, jaw angle is sharp.
Oblong (rectangle) Clearly longer than wide, with a straight forehead, cheeks and jaw of similar width.
Heart Wide forehead and cheekbones narrowing to a slim, often pointed chin.
Diamond Cheekbones are the widest point, with a narrower forehead and narrow chin.
Triangle (pear) Jaw is wider than the forehead.

Most people are a blend of two shapes. Your result shows your main shape and the closest second shape.

How to take the best photo

  1. Face the camera straight on, at eye level, with a neutral expression.
  2. Pull your hair back from your forehead and jaw. Hair hides the outline the tool needs.
  3. Remove glasses and avoid hats or headbands that cover the hairline.
  4. Use even light with no strong shadows on one side of your face.
  5. Hold the phone at arm's length or use the rear camera. Very close selfies distort proportions.

What to do with your face shape

  • Hairstyles: get cuts that balance your proportions, then preview them on your own photo with the hairstyle try-on.
  • Glasses: frames that contrast with your face shape usually look best, such as angular frames for round faces and rounder frames for square faces.
  • Eyebrows and makeup: a soft arch for round faces, flatter brows for long faces, and contour placement that suits your bone structure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know my face shape?

Upload a front-facing photo with your hair pulled back. The face shape detector measures your face length, forehead, cheekbones and jaw and compares the ratios. You can also measure yourself with a soft tape in front of a mirror.

Is the face shape detector free?

Yes. Your face shape and key measurements are free. A detailed style guide with hairstyles, glasses and eyebrow shapes for your face uses 10 credits.

Why did I get two face shapes?

Very few faces are a textbook example of one shape. When your measurements sit between two shapes, we show both so you can use advice from either.

What is the most common face shape?

Oval and round are among the most commonly reported, but estimates vary a lot by study and by who is measuring. There is no better or worse face shape; each one simply suits different styles.

Can my face shape change?

Your bone structure stays the same, but weight changes, aging and facial hair can change how your face shape reads in photos.

What happens to my photo?

It is used only for this measurement, never for facial recognition or training, and it is deleted automatically after 24 hours.
